Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday.  Today we have a fun idea for creating a shadow box using an art canvas.

"I often like to use the back of canvases as a base for some art. Just like a shadow box, it has a nice little nook to display something special."

Products Used:

Spellbinders S2-016 Window Two
S5-127 Labels Twenty Eight
LF-006 Wonderful Wings
S5-147 Resplendent Rectangles

JustRite Stamps:

CL03605 Harlequin Script Background Stamp

Other Materials Used:

6 x 8 inch canvas Patterned paper (Prima Printery A4 pad used here)
Gold cardstock
Foam mounting tape

Instructions:

Step 1

Gather supplies and choose the papers you wish to use.

  Step 2

Cut a piece of paper to fit the inside of the cavity, and glue it in place.

Step 3

From two different sheets of patterned paper, cut windows using the Die D'Lites Window Two and a slightly larger Labels Twenty Eight die. You just need the outside shape of the window for now, but keep the window itself for Step 5.

Step 4

Decorate the sides of the canvas. You can use acrylic paints, more patterned paper or simply stamping as I've done here.

Step 5

Cut a butterfly from the gold cardstock, and wedge the wings in the frame of the window to keep it from closing. Attach this to the inside of the canvas with very thin strips of foam mounting tape. Alternatively, you can place in here a treasured item of your choice (eg a glass vial with a lck of hair, a frozen Charlotte doll, a photo, etc).

 Step 6

I have torn these words from the patterned paper, but if you're using paper that doesn't have any words on it, then use a piece torn from an old book, or stamp some appropriate words. Glue the torn strip to the gold cardstock, and cut using the smallest die from the Resplendent Rectangles set to make the title.

Step 7

Take the sheets of paper with the windows cut out of them and adhere them to the canvas using foam mounting tape for extra dimension. Adhere the title with foam mounting tape just under the window.
